Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung 1.11.05 Dortmund. Elite musicians are coming here increasingly. The Tonhalle Orchestra visiting the Dortmund Konzerthaus has demonstrated in thrilling fashion its status today – at the peak of Europe. The Beethoven recordings which this traditional orchestra has produced under its chief conductor David Zinman were sensational in terms of vitality and depth. In Dortmund they began with Beethoven’s “Consecration of the House” in a sharp and clearly articulated style. David Zinman, who with his sharp precision belongs to a small and select group, and the soloist Yefim Bronfman, producing a full and rich sound, gave us a Second Piano Concerto which in no way veered towards the Mozartian. The reduced orchestra played out with great confidence; a movingly relaxed mood evolved. Bronfman gave the Adagio an emotional warmth, while his Finale was sparkling. And then, after the encounter with Dresden’s Staaskapelle in Essen, the wonderful Second Symphony of Schumann again, and once more in its complete form (perhaps if anything even more “romantic” than the last time). Zinman allows the music to blossom, moving at times into the realms of adventure. He has a sense for Schumann’s contemplative nature in the Adagio and for his emphasic writing in the Finale, which also represents courage in the face of life. The Tonhalle Orchestra’s playing of this work was simply perfect, because there was no coolness, but rather an extreme and psychologically expressive nervousness. Jubilation! DAVID ZINMAN |
