David Zinman salutes his friend and colleague, Sergiu Commissiona.

Following the death of Sergiu Commissiona, David Zinman, former music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra said how grateful he was to his friend and colleague for inviting him as principal guest, and subsequently enabling him to become music director of the orchestra from 1985-1998.  It was here that Zinman realised many of his musical dreams, and had the opportunity to make a huge number of recordings, across a very wide spectrum with an orchestra that had been built up to be strong on musicianship and unique sweet sounds.

“The Baltimore Orchestra grew under Sergiu’s stewardship.  It went from being a B orchestra to an A orchestra under his aegis.  He was responsible for transforming it into a full time symphony orchestra, and also for the building of the Josef Meyerhof Hall.  I always enjoyed Sergiu’s music-making. He was a fine colleague and I looked forward to his visits to Aspen, where he was due to come again this summer. We will miss him hugely.”

David Zinman is conductor & music director of the Tonhalle Orchestra of Zurich, Switzerland, and artistic director of the Aspen Music Festival.
